    More than a dozen Grant County business and community leaders were joined by a number of Freeport-McMoRan employees at a special meeting of the Gila Economic Development Alliance on Tuesday morning at the Santa Clara Armory to hear a presentation on the Copper Rule, a state regulatory framework for the mining industry now under fire in New Mexico courts.

     

    “This community was a strong supporter of the (copper) rule when it was adopted, and now that it’s going up on appeal to the Supreme Court,” said New Mexico Environment Department Cabinet Secretary Ryan Flynn, whose office drafted the regulations at the behest of the Legislature. “The Supreme Court will make a decision, and their decision will end this discussion, one way or another.
